EPS® Acidless Pickling
EPS® (Eco Pickled Surface) is an “acid free” replacement for traditional acid pickling that is environmentally friendly and produces a scale free, clean, rust resistant surface without the use of hazardous chemicals associated with acid pickling.
EPS is an “acid free” replacement for traditional acid pickling that is available in sheet or coil. Acidless Pickling is environmentally friendly and produces a scale free, clean, rust resistant surface without the use of hazardous chemicals normally associated with pickling steel. As opposed to acid pickling, EPS is a mechanical process that uses steel grit and water, both of which are re-circulated for continuous reuse. This technology is called slurry blasting. The slurry mixture is propelled onto the strip in a uniform stream that removes surface scale without removing the base steel.
EPS processing is also superior to shot blasting for removing oxides from the strip. The EPS process is also much cleaner than shot blasting. The water in the slurry mixture not only cleans the grit, it power washes the strip’s surface, leaving it exceptionally clean.
Since EPS is rust resistant, eco pickled steel does not require a protective coat of oil to keep it from rusting as is the case with acid pickled steel. That means there is no need for solvents to strip off the oil prior to painting. In addition, the EPS process actually creates a new surface as it removes mill scale. This new surface mitigates some other unwanted features such as pitting, rust scars, silicon streaks, and pickling stains frequently found on pickled and oiled material. With EPS, a customer can also specify the surface roughness (Ra value) needed for their application. The surface can be rougher for better paint or plating adhesion or smoother for other applications.
